Other names: Lycium Barbarum, Wolfberry, gou qi,in Korea the berry is called( gugija),in Thailand(gao ge), Tibetan (qouki, qou ki ji, quak qou, Kew ji, Kew ki ),in Japanese (kuko, kuko no mi or kuku no kajitsu ).

History and Origin

The Goji plant is indigenous to the continent of Asia. Specifically, it is found in parts of western China, Tibet and Mongolia; although it was originally discovered in the Himalayas. The Goji plant genus is composed of over forty variations of this beautiful plant and is known for their healing properties. The plant grows into an 8-10 foot tall shrub that has a live expectancy well over 100 years the seeds from which they sprout are similar to the dimensions of the tomato seeds. The plant itself is known for being robust and hardy and does not require much water; it does not however grow in balmy environments such as the tropical climates. The leaves are deep green in color and the fruit that is produced is a vibrant red, edible berry with a very sweet and pleasant taste. The main parts of this plant (fruit, leaves, flower) are used in folk medicine. Plants begin fruiting once 2 years old and will produce heavy crops in the 4th to 5th year.

The history of Goji can be traced back thousands of years and is an intricate part of Chinese and Asian folk medicine. Historically, the ancient Himalayans were the ones to first encounter the miracle fruit. For thousands of years, the Goji berry gave Himalayans health and energy. Then, once the Chinese and Indians passed through their lands, the Himalayans decided to share their ‘secret.’ The foreigners welcomed the new knowledge as they began incorporating the Goji berry into their own herbal solutions.

As the Goji berry became popular in other parts of Asia, news of its powers began to spread. An early Buddhist text, tells us that during the Tang Dynasty (around 800AD), a well that had been dug near a famous Buddhist temple was covered with Goji vines .Over the years, countless berries had fallen into the well. Those who prayed there had the ruddy complexion of good health, and even at the age of eighty they had no white hair and lost no teeth, simply because they drank the water from the well.

There are many Chinese legends in connection with Goji, most of them about Goji’s ability to extend a person’s life well beyond 100 years. One of the most famous legends talks about a man named Li Qing Yuen, who was born in 1678.A master herbalist, Li Qing traveled extensively throughout Tibet and Southeast Asia, learning from the many natural healers living there. Among his healthy habits were three daily pillars: a “soup” of Goji berries, Taoist yoga, and a diet primarily of steamed above-ground vegetables and herbs. Li Qing Yuen was also known to eat very little meat. Master Li died in 1930; at 252 years of age .He had married 14 times and lived to see almost 11 generations of descendants, who numbered nearly 200.Often people in American culture seek to become healthy through a miracle drug, vitamin or supplement. But this is not what nature intended for human beings, a fact that is readily acknowledged in Eastern philosophies. That is why in many Asian countries, natural substances are often used to treat ailments. This is especially the case with the Goji berry, one of the most nutritious ‘super fruits’ on the plane.

Composition of Goji

Goji contains19 kinds of amino acids, including 8 essential amino acids (e.g. isoleucine leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine), and 21 trace minerals (zinc, iron (more than steak), copper, selenium , calcium, germanium – unheard of in any fruit, selenium, phosphorus,) .Goji has a complete range of antioxidant carotenoids, including beta-carotene (more than in carrots), tetraterpenoids (zeaxanthin, and physalin,), and sesquiterpenoids (cyperone, and solavetivone). Furthermore, these berries contain vitamin E (which is rarely found in fruits) and are stuffed with vitamin C (at higher levels than those found in oranges), Vitamins B1, B2, and B6. Goji contains linoleic acid, Beta-sisterol and Betaine.

Goji also contains great amounts of polysaccharides (complex carbohydrates, bound to proteins), which are exceptional sources of the essential cell sugars — rhamnose, xylose, glucose, mannose, arabinose and galactose .These polysaccharides are named LBP1, LBP2, LBP3, LBP4, or Lycium Barbarium polysaccharides; for these reasons, the 4 LBP polysaccharides are called “Master Molecules»; this because they are unique to this herb only and are not found in any other plant on earth. Scientists deeply believe that these components are vitally important for the human body as they affect and improve the functioning of all body systems, producing amazing health benefits.

Goji and cancer

Goji is one of the only plant species on earth that contains anti-cancer mineral germanium. Its antioxidants and unique polysaccharides halt the genetic mutation that leads to cancer.

Goji polysaccharides have been shown in Chinese studies to enhance the production of IL-2, a crucial cytokine (cell protein) that induces potent anti –tumor responses in a variety of cancers .Goji kills tumor cells by inducing apoptosis, a process in which cancer cells are broken down and recycled .Goji also contains cyperone which is used in treating cervical cancer, and physaline; a natural compound active against all major types of leukemia (blood cancer)

Goji and Cardiovascular Health /Hypertension

The accumulation of lipid peroxides in the blood leads to cardiovascular disease, heart attack, atherosclerosis and stroke. Our blood contains the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) to fight against lipid peroxidation, but levels of SOD decrease as we age. Goji contains beta sitosterol, which lowers cholesterol levels and prevents cholesterol from forming arterial plaques; in addition, cyperone which benefits the heart and normalizes blood pressure.

Goji and Diabetes

Goji has been used for the treatment of diabetes for many years, and its polysaccharides have been shown to balance blood sugar and insulin response .Goji is a good source of chromium, a mineral that aids in blood sugar control; Goji also contains betaine, which prevents fatty liver disease and vascular damage often seen in diabetics.

Goji and Gastrointestinal Disorder

The Mongolian Institute of Traditional Medicine reported that Goji has been used in the treatment of atrophic gastritis, which is defined as weakened digestion due to reduced stomach activity. Goji restores the balance of the body ‘s important anti-inflammatory SOD enzyme .Replenishing the body’s anti-inflammatory enzymes with Goji eliminates the need to take anti-inflammatory drugs, which can irritate the digestive tract and cause ulcers

 Goji and Immunity

In Asia, the Goji berry has been used as a primary allergy therapy for century’s .The famous ethnobotanist, Dr James.a.Duke; classifies Goji as an immuno modulator-an enhancing substance that can balance and normalize abnormal immune response. Goji and Liver Protection

A new cerebroside was isolated from the Goji berry aimed to protect the liver cells of rats from the toxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride. In a further study, Kim SY et al (1999) postulated that the Lycium cerebrosides preserved hepatic mitochondrial levels of glutathione by scavenging reactive oxygen species produced and thereby reduce lipid peroxidation and cellular damage.

Goji and Obesity

The incredible Goji berry has also been tested as an anti-obesity drug. Patients were given a tea made of the berries each morning and each afternoon. Results were excellent with most patients losing significant weight. In an animal study, it was shown that Goji polysaccharides enhanced the conversion of food into energy, and reduced body weight.

Goji and Periodontal Disease

The effects of Goji on attachment and growth of human gingival fibroblasts to root surfaces in vitro were investigated by Liu B (1992) at Fourth Military Medical University in Xian, China. His results revealed that LBP (Goji polysaccharides), even at low doses, could improve attachment and growth of fibroblast on the planed diseased root surfaces to a certain extent. His results suggested that Goji may improve the formation of new attachment of periodontal tissue.
