What is Propolis?

Propolis is another one of the great products the bees produce that science cannot. It is a resinous substance that the bees gather from tree leaves and bark, and combine it with nectar, wax, pollen, and bee bread to make a natural “glue” type substance. This glue is used to seal hive cracks and holes. It is also placed at the entrance to the beehive, where incoming workers have to brush up against it as they enter the hive. This sterilizes the bees from infection, and may disinfect them upon entry as well. Beehives are more sterile than the most modern hospitals. Propolis is also used to line the birthing chamber where the queen lays her eggs, thereby providing a clean, sterile environment for the developing eggs.

 Content:

Propolis contains all the known vitamins except for vitamin K. Of all the fourteen minerals the human body requires for normal function, propolis contains all but one (sulfur). It contains a number of unidentifiable compounds that create a perfectly balanced food substance. It also has 16 amino acids that have been identified, and more bioflavanoids (necessary for anti-inflammatory action within the human body) than found in oranges.

Propolis contains approximately 55% resins & balms, 30% wax, 10% etheric oils and 5% pollen. Rich in amino acids and trace elements, it also has high vitamin content, including the valuable bioflavanoids, Vitamin K. It is these basic ingredients that give propolis its dynamic bacteria- destroying power.

Therapeutic properties

The benefits of Propolis Extract include antibacterial, antifungal, anti-viral, antioxidant, antiprotozoan, anticarcinogenic, antithrombotic properties and immune enhancement.

  1. Natural Antibiotic – antibacterial, antifungal, antiprotozoan

This substance has been used throughout many centuries for its natural antibiotic capabilities. Propolis does this thanks to Sinapic Acid, Isoferulic Acid, Galangin and Caffeic Acid. Propolis is still able to effectively combat bacterial strains, which have become resistant to modern synthetic antibiotics. Propolis works against bacteria in several ways. One study reported that it prevented bacterial cell division and also broke down bacterial walls and cytoplasm, which is how some prescription antibiotics work.

It is believed that Hippocrates, the father of medicine, prescribed the use of propolis to help heal sores and ulcers, internally and externally. Unlike penicillin or other drugs, propolis is always effective, because bacteria and viruses cannot build tolerances against it. This has been clinically verified after its use in more than 16,000 situations. Danish scientist, Dr. K. Lund Aagaard, considered an expert on propolis states, “The whole research program had a single purpose, namely, to obtain a substance with the greatest efficiency against the greatest number of diseases. The numerous healings are relevant by themselves and the number of people who use propolis is ever increasing.

The bee is the only insect ever to have been found to be bacteria free, due to the action of the propolis. Propolis has no known side effects. It boosts the immune system while fighting invaders, something prescription antibiotics cannot do. It also has demonstrated a remarkable ability to disable viruses. When prescription antibiotics must be used, propolis has proven to boost the effectiveness of the prescription, while strengthening the body and drastically reducing recovery times. Propolis is given to patients in Russia before and after surgery to aid in healing and prevent infection, and to boost energy levels during the recovery process. It is often mixed with garlic to make a powerful infection fighter, killing viruses and bacterial invaders without harming the beneficial bacteria needed by the body to function properly. Aristotle used Propolis as a remedy for many different illnesses and Pliny used it for skin sores.

It is very active against Staphylococcus (or staph infections, 20 strains), Streptococcus, (or strep throat infections, 10 strains), E. Coli (10 strains), and Candida Albicans (enhances the ability of anti-fungal pharmaceutical drugs to destroy this parasitic yeast like fungus that inhabits the intestines, genital tract, mouth, esophagus, & throat), Salmonella, Proteus vulgaris, E. coli, Koch’s bacillus, Trichophyton Rubrum (common in most skin disease), giardiasis and Trichomonas vaginalis.

One group of researchers compared a propolis extract against the standard antiprotozoal drug tinidazole in 138 people infected with the parasite giardiasis. The extract appeared to work about as well as the drug therapy tinidazol. It stimulates the process of phagocytosis

Antiviral

Perhaps more remarkable is that Propolis acts against viruses, which antibiotics do not. It does this thanks to its content in Cinnamic Acid and its derivatives. A number of medical journal reports have discussed the role of propolis in fighting upper respiratory infections, such as those caused by the common cold and influenza viruses (Focht J, Arzneimittel-Forschung, Aug.1993; 43:921-3). Other investigators have reported that the cinnamic acid extracts of propolis prevent viruses from reproducing, but they worked best when used during the entire infection (Serkedjieva J, Journal of Natural Products, March 1992; 55:294-302).

Propolis (tincture applied topically) inhibits and treats the Herpes Zoster and Herpes Simplex Viruses (due to Flavonols and Luteolin). Propolis can prevent recurrence of Herpes Simplex Type 2 lesions for 6 months or more; eliminates the Pain associated with the Herpes Virus in 100% of cases; and eliminates the itching associated with Herpes Viruses in 85% of cases. Propolis prevents the recurrence of Herpes lesions in 90% of cases; heals existing Herpes lesions in 90% of cases and has a direct effect on the inflamed Nerve Fibers that are attacked by the Herpes Virus].

  1. Anti-inflammatory

The bioflavanoids in propolis make it a superb anti-inflammatory. It also enables it to be so effective in boosting the body. Applied topically to bruises and burns accelerates the healing and prevents infection

  1. Antioxidant

Propolis is high in flavonoids, (flavonoids are a super class of antioxidant), which by themselves may account for many of the benefits of propolis. It contains 21 different flavonoids and antioxidants to help control free radicals. Other antioxidants found in Propolis are terpenes and bioflavonoids, as well as cinnamic, phenolic, and caffeic acids.

Free radicals are caused by waste from our body cells that increase with stress and infections as well as through environmental contaminants and toxins. They cause cell damage or cell death if they are not neutralized. The antioxidants found in Propolis help neutralize the free radicals and prevent cell damage. Bee propolis is believed to stimulate phagocytosis, the means by which white blood cells destroy bacteria.

Propolis is a safe diet supplement, producing no negative side effects, and taken regularly can actually create a positive reaction to almost any disease. In today’s world where antibiotics are routinely over-prescribed, this bee product can be your very best first line of defense against illness and chronic disease

It protects the body against the toxic effects of Gamma Rays due to the antioxidant properties of the bioflavonoids.

  1. Anticarcinogenic

The caffeic acid in propolis may help prevent colon cancer, according to an article published in the September 1993 issue of Cancer Research, which reported that laboratory rats who were given took caffeic acid did not develop precancerous tissue, even after they were exposed to cancer-causing chemicals.

When consumed internally it has a healing rate of 65% for benign skin cancers. [

  1. Endometriosis and Infertility

One isolated study, published only in abstract form, tested bee propolis in women with mild endometriosis and infertility. Reportedly, researchers found that use of bee propolis at a dose of 500 mg twice daily resulted in a pregnancy rate of 60%, as compared to 20% in the placebo group, a statistically significant difference. It is not clear why propolis should have this effect.

  1. Anti-inflammatory

Helps to suppress Inflammation. Renders good results against inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and the throat, dry cough, halitosis, tonsillitis, ulcers, and acne. Reduces the chronic Inflammation associated with enlarged prostate gland.

  1. Perfect food

Propolis contains all 22 nutrients needed by the body for complete and perfect health. It contains over 16 different vitamins, as well as minerals, enzymes, co-enzymes, carbohydrates, hormones, proteins and amino acids (the building blocks of life itself).

All in complete and natural balance. Propolis is a safe diet supplement, producing no negative side effects, and taken regularly can actually create a positive reaction to almost any disease. In today’s world where antibiotics are routinely over-prescribed, this bee product can be your very best first line of defense against illness and chronic disease.

Scientists, researchers, and health & nutrition practitioners all around the world have hailed the value of propolis as a perfect food as well as its medicinal and restorative properties.
