The high alpha-linolenic acid (an essential fatty acid) content of flax seed oil counteracts allergies by slowing down the recruitment of white blood cells to the sites of allergies. Alpha-linolenic acid from flax seed oil also retards the production of two pro-inflammatory compounds (interleukin 1 and leukotriene B4), which are involved in the allergic response.
